Cytologist
POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES
Accurately processes all cytological specimens and performs the final microscopic diagnosis for gynecologic cell samples that are within normal limits and performs the preliminary microscopic diagnosis for abnormal gynecologic and all non-gynecologic cell samples. Periodically supervises work of trainees and other supportive technical/clerical personnel employed in the laboratory. Rapidly and accurately performs assigned duties. Meets work deadlines of department and maintains the highest possible quality standards and up-to-date cytological procedures. Accountable for the final diagnosis of all negative gynecologic cases and the preliminary diagnosis of abnormal gynecological and all non-gynecologic cases. Accountable for proper identification and correction of unexpected as well as frequently occurring problems and for accurately identifying specimens with correct patient
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Requires at least five (5) years for experience as a certified Cytologist Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR Graduated from a school of Cytology accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and accreditation or other organization approved by HHS OR Certified in Cytology by a certifying agency approved by HHS (must maintain certification status in compliance with specifications for continuing education required by the certification agency.)
LICENSURE/CERTIFICAITON
Cytologist Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) is required. Must maintain certification status in compliance with specifications for continuing education required by the certification agency
